The compressor is designed to pump refrigerant through the A/C system and to convert low pressure vapor refrigerant into high pressure vapor refrigerant. All modern compressors utilize a clutch and drive pulley. The pulley is driven off a drive belt whenever the engine is running. When the A/C button is pushed the clutch is engaged, locking the compressor to the pulley, causing it to turn.
If the compressor has failed, the A/C system will not work. A compressor that is seized may also contaminate the rest of the A/C system with metal debris.
Cause of Air conditioning compressor faulty:
A damaged or failed compressor can manifest itself as follows:
- Leak
- Noise development
- Insufficient or no cooling performance
- Fault code in the air-conditioning control unit or engine/body control unit
There are a number of possible causes of failure:
- Bearing damage caused by a defective clamping device or wear
- Leaks in the compressor shaft or the housing
- Mechanical damage to the compressor housing
- Contact (electrical connections)
- Electrical control valve
- Lack of refrigerant oil
- Lack of refrigerant
- Solids (e.g. chips)
- Humidity (corrosion etc.)
- Defective tensioning elements and ancillary units

Step For Replace Air Conditioning Pump Compressor
- The A/C compressor will be located at the front of the engine with the rest of the belt-driven accessories.
- Locate the serpentine belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner.
- Remove the belt from the pulleys.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the compressor and the pressure hoses from the compressor.
- Remove the compressor mounting bolts and the compressor from the vehicle.
- Prepare the new compressor.
- Replace the pressure line O-rings.
- Lower the new compressor into the vehicle.
- Reinstall the mounting bolts and reinstall the lines and the electrical connectors.
- Position the belt on the pulleys.
- Install the new belt.
