Do We Need To Replace Car Shock?

Shocks are essential to a car’s performance, giving it a smooth and even ride. Over time, however, the vehicle’s suspensions become worn out. You may notice potholes and speed bumps are more severe and uncomfortable to drive over. In this case, you’ll want to replace your shocks, which you can do at home to save some money or go out give the job to the professions people to do it.  

When do you need your suspension checked?

At a minimum your suspension should be inspected at every service, or whenever your remove your car’s wheels. However, outside of your regular service it’s important to look out for signs that your suspension system is experiencing problems.

When suspension:

Check for the stationary, for these tell-tale signs that your suspension system is experiencing problems:

• Your tyres are unevenly worn
• Your car does not sit level when parked
• Your car’s shock absorbers show signs of fluid leakage
• Your car’s shock absorbers are dented or physically damaged
• Your car’s bushings or mounts are sagged, cracked, or distorted

Check when driving, these signs when your car is in motion:

• Your car dips forward when braking
• Your car doesn’t handle properly around corners
• Your car bounces when you drive
• Your car has poor handling and excessive body roll on corners

Sometimes changes to your suspension system, especially to the performance of your shock absorbers, can be difficult to notice at first as they wear out over time.

Should shock absorbers be replaced in pairs?

Each of your vehicle’s four shock absorbers typically experience the same conditions over their lifetime. If you find one shock absorber that needs replacing, chances are the other shock absorbers will also need replacing immediately or at some point in the near future.

It is recommended that you replace all four shock absorbers on your vehicle at the same time but if that’s not practical then certainly they must be replaced in pairs – two front or two rear.

If you raise or lower your vehicle’s ride height with aftermarket springs, you should also consider shock absorbers to suit. Altering your ride height effects your vehicles centre of gravity and may require different shock absorbers to optimize your spring change. You may also require longer travel shocks for a lifted vehicle or shorter range for a lowered vehicle.
