What is a shock absorber?

Your car’s rear shock absorber is an essential part of a vehicle’s suspension system.

It is usually made up of a cylindrical container filled with a liquid or gas with a piston located in the center.

It is designed to absorb the shocks generated by uneven road surfaces while driving.

They also prevent the vehicle’s tire from hopping or bouncing in uneven terrain.

There is a easy way to determine whether your rear shocks are up to scratch.

  • Park your car on a hard, level surface.
  • Push down one corner of your vehicle (taking care to spread your weight and avoid damaging a body panel).

If the shock absorber working well, it will quickly compress and rebound.

If it continues to bounce after releasing, the shock absorbers are not working efficiently and replacement may be required.

How important is replacing your shock absorber?

A fully functioning pair of rear shock absorbers is vital to ensure that your car handles safely in all conditions. They are responsible for eliminating most of the road vibration that is transferred through the body of the vehicle.

If your shock absorbers are worn or leaking, not only will your journey be bumpy and uncomfortable, but other suspension and steering components may wear out and your vehicle may not handle as it should.

Do you have to replace both shock absorbers?

It’s not necessary to replace both shock absorbers if there is only one not working, but it’s usually recommended to replace them in pairs, to make sure the vehicle handling remains stable and predictable. For example, both front struts or both rear shocks.

If your car is not very old, replacing only one strut or shock absorber may be enough.
