Oil Change
What is an oil change all about?
Engine oil is the lifeblood of the engine. The oil resides in the oil pan, which is under the car attached to the bottom of the engine. All internal (moving) parts of the engine need to be lubricated by the engine oil. Inadequate lubrication will cause the parts to wear out faster and eventually lead to engine failure. An oil filter keeps the oil clean and free of debris. If the filter is not replaced on a regular basis, it will get clogged and will not be able to pass oil into the engine.
Keep in mind:
- When the oil is changed you should always replace the oil filter.
- Replacement oil should always match the required specifications for your vehicle.
- After your oil has been changed, it’s a good idea to run the vehicle for a few minutes to make sure that there are no leaks.
When should I change my oil filers?
Regularly changing your oil and keeping your filters clean helps to ensure your car’s engine stays in tip-top shape and can even boost its lifespan. But how often should you change your oil and filters?
There are many factors that contribute to the overall health of your car engine, including the average length of the trips you take and the conditions you drive in.
Your manufacturer’s handbook will offer their recommendation of how often you should carry out regular maintenance work, such as oil and filter changes, but this can vary depending on how you use your car, as well as the age of your vehicle.
Most manufacturers recommend that you have your oil and filters changed every 5,000km to 10,000km or every six months – whichever comes first.
But there are certain times where you might wish to change your oil and filters more frequently.
Driving in particularly dusty or wet conditions can be harder on your engine, as can short, frequent trips and high-speed driving in hot weather.
Older cars with less efficient engines might require more frequent servicing, and you might also want to get your oil changed more often if you regularly use your vehicle for towing or to carry heavy loads.
If you are unsure of when your oil needs to be changed, or you want more information about the process, your Sydney Mechanic & Smash Repair can help.
