There are several signs that a fuel pump is on the way out. The most obvious is that the car won’t start, because the pump is unable to get the fuel to the engine. It’s likely that other symptoms will have shown themselves first, though.
These include a loss of power when accelerating, an intermittent stuttering when running at higher speeds and an unexpected surge in acceleration because the pump cannot maintain a constant fuel pressure.
The symptoms of a faulty fuel pump may be confused with a clogged fuel filter or mis-fuelling, so it’s important to get the problem diagnosed properly before you begin.
So, before you decide to replace your fuel pump yourself, be honest: do you have the patience, tools, space and ability to do the job right? If you’re uncertain, it’s probably more time and cost effective to have a professional complete the repair. And it will most certainly be safer.
What tools do you need to install a fuel pump?
Depending on what type of car you have. But, in general, you will need:
- Allen wrench set

Removal
- Put on your safety glasses / glove and have a fire extinguisher nearby. Safely raise and support the rear of the vehicle using a jack and jack stands. Set the parking brake and chock the front wheels.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Relieve fuel system pressure following the procedure found in the factory repair information.
- Drain the fuel tank if it has a lot of fuel. Usually, this is done using a hand-operated pump or siphon. If you choose to leave the tank full, it will be a lot heavier and harder to balance.
- Loosen the clamp on the fuel filler neck, then disconnect the neck from the fuel tank.
Support the fuel tank with a transmission jack or equivalent. - Remove the fuel tank strap bolts and the straps themselves.
- Lower the tank just enough to access and disconnect the fuel hoses, electrical connections and emissions hoses.
- Once everything is disconnected, lower the tank completely.
- Clean the area around the pump access hole to prevent dirt and debris from entering the tank.
- Remove the retainer ring or bolts securing the pump assembly to the tank and the fuel pump and seal ring from the fuel tank.
Installation step:
- Install a new rubber gasket to the fuel tank. Place the fuel tank back under the vehicle.
- Raise up the fuel tank to the vent hose.
- Attach the fuel tank straps and tighten them up till they stop.
- Align up the fuel filler neck to the cutaway in the fuel door area.
- Install the fuel pump onto carburetted engines.
- Check for leaks
- Lower the vehicle
- Test drive the vehicl
