Some people ask Do we need to replace a transmission? The answer is Yes. A big part of transmission repair is replacement. It is actually, literally, the biggest. Depending upon the problem your transmission is experiencing, there are a number of parts that could be replaced. And sometimes it’s not a “part” at all but rather the transmission fluid that requires replacing. However, sometimes the solution calls for the replacement of the entire transmission. How do you need which is the correct part you need to change or when do you need to change?
The transmission fitted to your vehicle is what transmits drive, from the engine to the wheels. These transmissions can come in many forms, including;
- Manual
- Automatic
- Semi-Automatic
- Constantly Variable
- Dual-clutch
Although configurations vary, they are all designed to carry out the same job and all require periodic maintenance to continue operating at their best.
How often should do a transmission service?
As a rough guide, and this depends on how many kilometres you run the car in a year, you should have a transmission service at least once a year. Based on average use this equates to around once every 20,000km.
However, if you’re driving the car with heavy loads regularly this can prematurely wear your transmission, and you should get it serviced more often. When you service your transmission regularly it can stop you from having a complete transmission rebuild – which can cost thousands and see your car off the road for many days.
One of the most important things that will be covered in any manual or automatic transmission service is that the oil will be changed. Over time, the transmission oil will collect minute particles of metals and this can add to the wearing of the gears inside the transmission and shorten its life.
Symptoms of a transmission issue
- Engine light on dashboard
- Vehicle struggling to accelerate, or engine speed increase with no increase of vehicle speed
- Shuddering coming through vehicle when driving
- Whirring, grinding or clunking noise coming from vehicle
- Vehicle has no drive, or cannot select gears
Transmission replacement
If the technicians working on your transmission determine that the part that is causing trouble is inaccessible while the transmission is within the body of your vehicle or if they cannot ascertain the cause of the problem while the transmission is within the body of the vehicle, then the transmission must be completely removed.
At this point, we’re talking a bigger deal of a repair. We’re talking about a possible transmission overhaul or replacement. A transmission overhaul is essentially a rebuilding of your transmission piece by piece, part by part. A replacement involves a wholesale change of transmissions. And a word to the wise: it is generally favourable to replace your transmission with a new one. Old transmissions have questionable histories and could be more bother than they’re worth.
