Things to consider when buying a used car from an individual in Australia

For many people, buying a used car may be a priority, but although used cars are very advantageous in terms of price, there are many more things to worry about than new cars. So how can you buy a used car in Australia that is cost effective and looks good?

There are 4 channels to buy a used car.

(1) Individual (Individual)

(2) Professional car dealers (Dealer)

(3) Auction houses (Auctions)

(4) Network (Internet)

Today, I’d like to talk to you about what to look for when buying a used car from an individual.

Please remember that there is no warranty for cars bought from private individuals. There are no returns or refunds when the transaction is completed. You must rely on your own judgment when buying a car from a private party, so be sure to check very thoroughly before you buy.

Inspections before buying a car

Before buying a car, be sure to do the following four checks or you cannot make any payments.

1. Ask the seller for the registration certificate and also to see their driver’s license. Check that the name and address on the top of the vehicle registration certificate match the driver’s license. Only the registered owner has the right to sell the car.

2. Check that the license plate number, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and engine number on the car match the information on the registration certificate. You must make sure that the car you are buying is the one on the registration certificate. Note: If the car for sale is unregistered, be sure to check that the Safety Inspection Report is within 42 days. 3.

3. To confirm that the car is registered, you can check it for free at MY RTA at www.rta.nsw.gov.au/myrta/ or call Roads and Maritime Services at 13 22 13 with the plate number and VIN details.

4. Do a Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) check at www.ppsr.gov.au to make sure the car is not in debt, has not been reported stolen or reported as stolen, and has not been scrapped. You can also pay to get a PPSR certificate so that the car will not be repossessed because it has undisclosed debts. Never rely on the PPSR certificate provided by the seller.

Other checks

Once you have completed the four steps above, you may wish to consider the following.
Research the car’s history: For a fee, you can obtain a MY RTA Vehicle History Check to find out how the car has been used and how many owners it has had to date.
Call the manufacturer (if the car is still under warranty) to make sure the warranty is still valid, as the manufacturer may cancel the warranty in some cases, for example, if the car has been retired.
It is illegal to turn the odometer backwards. The odometer reading (the total number of miles the car has been driven) should match the age and condition of the car.

Checking the vehicle

If you are not a connoisseur, you will not be able to read the mechanical performance, but there are a few points that are a summary of the valuable experience of car enthusiasts.

-Look at the brake pad wear condition.
-Look at the tailgate tools are complete, such as spare tire and tire changing tools and spare keys, etc.
-Check whether the water tank is leaking.
-Look at the wear and tear of the tires.
-Try to ask for a cold start to see if there is no noise and shaking at idle, and if there is a stutter when starting and shifting.
-Turning and passing through speed bumps to see if there is any spring noise and shaking when braking.
-Do a three-point turnaround with the steering wheel as full as possible to see if there is any noise.
-Observe the color of the exhaust to see if there is blue smoke.
-Whether the steering wheel is running off when it is set right.
-open the engine to check whether the noise is loud.
-Underneath the car whether the transmission is leaking oil.
-Other small details such as lights, seat belts, seat adjustment, windshield wipers, and the closing and opening of the trunk, gas tank door, doors, etc.

If you have friends who know about cars, you can ask them to go with you to see the car. They may find problems that you didn’t expect at all.

Mechanical Inspection

After you have inspected the car and test-driven it, we strongly recommend that you have a qualified mechanic come and inspect the car. A mechanical inspection will give you a lot of information about the car, whether it has been in a serious accident or is even a restored junk car. By having the vehicle thoroughly inspected, you can have peace of mind that the money spent on the inspection is worth it. If you think a mechanical inspection is too expensive, then you should also ask a friend or relative who knows about cars to take a closer look at the car for you.

Other things to consider

(1) Consider the fuel consumption: If you buy a small car, the insurance will be cheaper, the gasoline cost will be less, and you can save on maintenance, so you will save a lot on the overall cost.
(2) Compare three companies and you won’t lose out: when you buy a car, go to several car dealers and check the internet is also a good method. If you want to get a loan, you also need to shop around; go to as many financial institutions as possible and use the comparison method to force them to offer the lowest interest rate.
(3) The owner history of the car is important: the fewer owners the better; it is good to have elderly or female owners.
