It’s almost impossible to ignore windshield wipers when they squeak. Many people liken that awful, repetitive noise to the disturbing sound of fingernails scratching on a chalkboard. If you hear squeaking, you are probably going to find it distracting while you are driving. You won’t be able to relax to music or focus on the road. Of course, you also should not ignore the noise because it’s a symptom that your wipers don’t work efficiently, are likely to fail, and may even cause damage to your valuable windshield.
Why do windshield wipers squeak?
Dirty glass is by far the most common cause of squeaky windshield wipers. Small particles of dirt, sand or road salt sprinkled across the glass can cause friction when the wipers pass over, leading to the unwanted squeaking.
How do we stop them from squeaking?
The most obvious way to prevent your wiper blades from squeaking is to make sure there is enough moisture on the windscreen to allow them to travel smoothly. Or simple lift up your wiper arms and check that nothing is stuck on the bottom of the blades and that they’re clear of any dirt. If there’s nothing to find, a healthy application of glass cleaner onto your windscreen should help clear out any stubborn build up of dust, dirt or grime. If that fails, or only provides short term relief, then you might have to accept the fact that you have cracked, worn or deteriorated wiper blades.
Unfortunately, this means it’s game over and you’ll now have to replace your entire car.
How to replace wiper?
- Lift blade assembly from the windscreen.
- Remove the old blade by squeezing the end with the clip attached together and withdrawing it from the assembly.
- Insert the new wiper blade into all blade claws and firmly lock the metal retaining clip into the end claw.Ensure that all the claws are engaged in the backing, if you don’t do that, you can damage your windscreen.If you’re fitting multi-fit blades, check that the correct recess has been used. For 6.5mm width blades, slide the refill through the top recess. For 8.5mm width blades, slide it through the bottom or widest recess.
- Whilst holding the blade, cut the refill to the required length, but leave a minimum of 25mm from the end claw.
